Faster, Better Turning Tool Performance – By Sandvik Coromant’s PrimeTurning Technology

| BlackHawk Team

While we’re all looking for ways to improve engineering and manufacturing, the stakes are high for better, faster, smarter technology. That’s why in a recent article by Advanced Manufacturing, the publication reviewed the newest turning insert technologies on the market. Leading the list was PrimeTurning by Sandvik Coromant, a vastly different approach to turning which promises to improve processing time, tool life and cycle time.

You might already be familiar with Sandvik Coromant’s PrimeTurning technique if you’ve seen the CoroTurn line which includes CoroTurn Prime A-type and B-type. PrimeTurning is a new methodology that enables you to do turning in all directions much more efficiently and productively compared to conventional turning.  Advanced Manufacturing explains that “The tool enters the component at the chuck and removes material as it travels toward the end of the component.” According to Sandvik Coromant, productivity can increase by 50% compared to many existing turning operations as it allows you to run at higher speeds and feeds compared to similar operations while maintaining tolerances and chip control.

Faster turning and extended tool life occurs by way of shallow entering angels and higher lead angels that produce thinner, wider, curved chips. Those chips exit easier, releasing load and heat from the nose radius. By entering 25°-30° angles, users can maintain chip control and tolerances. Chip jamming is reduced even further by the PrimeTurner’s cutting direction, which moves away from the shoulder.

Like Sandvik Coromant, BlackHawk has a reputation for quality and innovation. We’re proud to carry Sandvik Coromant products.

Sandvik’s CoroTurn Prime Twin tool holder, for example, is bringing multi-task and vertical lathe machines to a higher level. Twin-tool holders allow a machine to perform dual capabilities without stopping to change an insert between functions. Using the same tool, machines can go seamlessly from roughing to finishing without stopping. Tools include external turning operations in all directions, including CoroTurn Prime A-type tool with three 35°  corners for light roughing, finishing and profiling and CoroTurn Prime B-type tool with strong corners for rough machining.
