Seco Indexable End Mills: Which Type Do you Need?

| BlackHawk Team

Indexable end mills are big sellers at Black Hawk Industrial. Thousands of different mills, or cutters, are available on the site. Choosing the right type one is important because a good indexable mill can increase accuracy and production in the workshop.

Take Seco, for example. When it comes to milling, Seco Tools is one of the world’s largest providers of comprehensive metal cutting solutions.

Black Hawk carries a large number of Seco tools that prove to smooth finished surfaces. Indexable end mills come with cooling or without cooling. They come as ball end mills or square-shoulder end mills. Whether chamfering or cutting a keyway, Seco mill cutters are among the best sellers.

Chamfer End Mills

Chamfer mills, also known as chamfer cutters are among the most common end mills. They eliminate sharp edges that can be left during the tool-making process. Chamfer cutters replace sharp edges with a sloped (chamfer) surface to make the part stronger and have a better appearance for the end-user. A chamfer end mill can be applied flat at an angle to the edge of a piece to create a beveled edge. This is normally done to remove burrs and reduce the sharpness of a piece. Cutting edges at an angle is helpful when designing two parts to fit together.

Chamfer Benefits:
  • Eliminates sharp edges
  • Makes parts smooth, stronger and more professional-looking
  • Can create a sloped angle or beveled edge

Ball End Mills

Ball end mills, also known as ball nose end mills, have a rounded edge as the name suggests. These cutters are commonly used for manufacturing 3-dimensional contour shapes for molds and dies.  Ball end mills drill shallow hemispherical holes. Cuts are generally made at the same diameter as the tool, but can also be made at one half the diameter of the tool.

Ball End Benefits:
  • Produces a hemispherical shape
  • Useful for dies and molds
  • Can create a cut the size of the tool or smaller

Square Shoulder End Mills

Square shoulder end mills can be set to cut at true 90 degree angles. They use positive axial and radial insert geometry to create two faces simultaneously. These cutters work well for pocketing, slotting, ramping, profiling, step milling, face milling and shoulder milling. Square shoulder mills can be found in thru-coolant varieties.

Square Shoulder End Mill Benefits:
  • Versatile uses
  • Produce 90 degree cuts
  • Some come with thru-coolant
