Spotlight on Seco Tools

| BlackHawk Team

Whether your business is aerospace manufacturing, automotive or shipbuilding, we can all agree that quality machine tools matter. Cutting processes, in particular, are among the most important technologies used in our common industries, which makes it of upmost importance to have the highest quality and most precise manufacturing parts accessible to us. When it comes to specialty cutters, one of our most trusted brands is Seco Tools. The long-standing, reputable manufacturer has been around for more than 80 years and is one of the world’s largest producers of metal cutting tools.

BlackHawk is proud to offer Seco Tools. You can count on this brand to be continuously improving its line, based on new technologies and innovations.

JETSTREAM TOOLING

Recently Seco Tools introduced Jetstream Tooling® high-pressure coolant technology for threading shank holders. The new range includes shank holders for external applications, boring bars for internal applications and GL-heads for use with Seco Steadyline boring bars.

These turning holders deliver a concentrated high-pressure jet of coolant through a hose connection for up to 275 bar/3,988 psi coolant inlets to the optimum position close to the cutting edge. Compared to conventional flood coolant, Jetstream Tooling’s high-pressure technology is more able to penetrate the heat vapor barrier that develops on a cutting tool and workpiece in the cut zone. This Jetstream technology also makes it possible to guide or steer chips away from the cut and increases tool life, even with minimum coolant pressure.

For parts made from titanium or similar materials, Jetstream Tooling technology is capable of breaking the tough threading chips to increase tool life. When threading steel and stainless steel, the improved chip control of the new thread turning tools allow for potentially 30 percent to 60 percent higher cutting speeds without compromising thread surface quality.

SUSTAINABILITY

Taking a step toward a more environmentally-friendly and more economical value chain, Seco has upgraded its material to introduce its new stainless tool steel IDUN. This new tool is developed from the material Mirax 40, which Seco manipulates to turn into IDUN. Compared to traditional material, IDUN has higher corrosion resistance – an obvious benefit. It also takes much fewer processing steps to build than Seco’s other tools. One of those deleted steps is nickel-coating, which until now was crucial to corrosion resistance. IDUN, however, does not require nickel-coating – a move that saves Seco several days of processing – making the tool available much sooner.

“In custom tooling, it’s very important that the customer gets the tools fast, and on time,” Susanne Evergård, manager of sustainable business at Seco Tools said in an interview. “Having fewer production steps makes the process quicker and more predictable. The produced products are ready directly after machining. No extra operation, like nickel-coating, heat treatment or sandblasting, is needed. With IDUN, we can minimize negative environmental impact from energy usage, transportation, and hazardous substances. This way, we can create a more sustainable value chain.”

So far, the only commercially-available tool made with IDUN is the R220.88 face milling cutter for roughing and semi-finishing applications in the general machining and automotive segments. Seco is working toward minimizing the use of nickel-coating on other products as well.
