What is Deburring?

| BlackHawk Team
Deburring is the process in which sharp edges and burrs are removed from a part to create a more aesthetically pleasing final product. By all accounts, a better fit and finish are integral to any milling job. Deburring is a big part of that. A good deburring process not only provides you with a better finish, it also contributes to reduced parts and labor costs as well as increased capacity.

What is deburring?

What is a burr? A burr is a rough edge or ridge left on an object (especially of metal) by the action of a tool or machine. (Source) It’s an unwanted piece or pieces of metal sticking out of a workpiece after drilling. It's essentially a mess of material around the opening created in a material by a machine. After milling, a worker will take the parts off of the machine and send them to a deburring department. Here, the department removes the burrs and sharp points either by hand or machine.

Automatic vs. hand deburring

A good deburring device will quickly and completely remove sharp edges from an object. Some people choose to perform deburring by hand, but this requires a very talented person with a lot of experience. That person delicately removes every imperfection on an object. This process can take hours. Manual deburring is extremely labor-intensive. Deburring by machine can be completed faster while improving part profitability and workplace safety.

For automatic deburring, we recommend Harvey Deburring products. Harvey makes high precision CNC deburring tools that fit right into the CNC machine. From square miniature deburring end mills to double angle pointed shank cutters, these deburring tools reduce deburring time from hours to minutes.  Who doesn’t want to increase production rate? There are many benefits to CNC automated deburring vs. doing it by hand. By reducing offline operation time, you’re saving money by reducing your labor costs. You’re also eliminating location issues. CNC deburring tools are held to higher tolerances than hand-deburring tools. Lastly, you’ll reduce your number of mistakes. Final parts are cleaner when you eliminate hand-held errors.
